Coronavirus in Bulgaria: kindergartens and nurseries open

According to the decree of the Minister of Health Kiril Ananiev (Reserve No. RD-01-270/19.05.2020) from May 22 Kindergartens and nurseries are opening in Bulgaria. The purpose of the opening is to help parents who are unable to stay at home with their children. However, the minister called for children to be left at home if possible, especially if there are people over 60 living in the family. The reason is that the risk of coronavirus infection has not yet passed.

“If there is no alternative, at least do not use public transport,” the minister asked. According to Ananyev, serious medical control is planned over the opening of kindergartens and nurseries. Each child's temperature will be taken on the first day, and only those with symptoms on subsequent days. Measures will also be taken to maintain distance between staff and parents.

Children will not be forced to take tests and receive certificates stating that they are healthy. However, parents will be required to sign a declaration stating that they are aware of and agree to the terms and conditions of attending the kindergarten.

Bulgarian Education Minister Krasimir Valchev reminded that it is not possible to oblige children to keep a distance. He added that measures are being taken to separate groups, but children should not be expected to be kept at a distance from each other at all times.

In case of infection, certain procedures are planned to combat outbreaks of coronavirus in kindergartens, explained Chief State Health Inspector Angel Kunchev. According to him, quarantine is often introduced in kindergartens due to other diseases, such as scarlet fever, chicken pox, measles and others. Depending on the size of the institution and the organization of the groups, it will be decided whether a particular group or the entire kindergarten should be closed.

The Ministry of Education does not expect full attendance of kindergartens and nurseries after their opening. Groups are expected to consist of 10-11 children. According to Krasimir Valchev, if it doesn't rain, children will have to spend most of their time outside.

The government expects that regional authorities will make every effort to organize the safe operation of kindergartens.
