Coronavirus in Bulgaria: restrictions on the border with Greece

Greece is introducing new measures for all citizens entering through the Kulata-Promahon border crossing, starting July 15 at 06.00. It will be necessary to provide a negative PCR test result for coronavirus. According to the Bulgarian embassy in Athens, the test must be done no earlier than 72 hours before arrival at the border. The certificate with the test result must be issued in English, indicating the full name and passport number (identity card). The test result will only be accepted if it was done in accredited laboratories. The list of official laboratories can be viewed at https://mfa.bg/bg/situationcenter/25986, https://www.mfa.bg/embassies/greecegk/news/25984, https://www.mfa.bg/embassies/greece /news/25983.

Greek authorities are strengthening control over compliance with anti-epidemic requirements. Intensive checks are expected this coming weekend not only at the border, but also on roads within the country.

We also remind you that from July 1, 2020, as part of strengthening measures to combat coronavirus, all citizens arriving in Greece must fill out an online registration form 24 hours before entry. The completed form generates a unique code (QR), which will be checked by border authorities. Travelers will need to present it on their phone or on paper. You can fill out the form here: https://travel.gov.gr/#/

Depending on the information provided on the form, passengers undergo additional screening. Every day, 3,000 COVID-19 tests are carried out on the Greek-Bulgarian border. This means that if the number of passengers per day is within 3000, then every person entering will be checked. The authorities also reminded that all passengers must comply with sanitary measures, including the use of masks and social distancing.

Passengers who have been selected for COVID-19 testing will be required to isolate themselves for 48 hours at the address provided on the online form. If the test is positive, they will be detained by Greek authorities for a mandatory 14-day quarantine. However, if Bulgarian citizens who test positive for COVID-19 wish to return instead of spending the 14-day quarantine period in Greece, they will be allowed to leave. Upon arrival in Bulgaria, you should immediately inform local authorities about a positive test for COVID-19.

We also remind you that from July 1, entry for all citizens across land borders from Bulgaria to Greece will be possible only through the Kulata-Promahon border checkpoint. The Greek authorities will consider the possibility of opening other border crossing points in accordance with the development of the epidemiological situation.

Due to the expected heavy traffic during the summer at the Kulata-Promahon border checkpoint, citizens planning a trip to Greece are advised to prepare in advance for long waits.
